Super Sunday Review

24 Oct 2016 by David Fitzsimons

It was one of those days that you were glad that you didn’t pull the pin because of a little rain.

With the rain overnight and the few showers in the morning it was looking likely that the Melbourne weather would cause an upset but with a hardworking team and a bit optimism the track dried out and with a delayed start the Endurance sessions kicked off at approx 10:45am. The riders were led by Chief Commissaire Andrew Fitzgerald through Scratch Racing, Eliminations and Team Sprints. With mix grades this year it was the young guns showing some of the old guns how it’s done.

The morning session was really just a prelude and heart starter for the afternoons Super Sprint Series, with the majority of the field in the morning opting to race through the Sprints in the afternoon , many of them doing the Sprint Series for the first time.

In The SS we were treated to a masterclass in power and speed with Josiah Ng (3 time Olympian) racing in A Grade against local favourite James Dann in the final of the Sprints and again in the Kierin.
It was great racing across all the grades with Juniors mixing it with the Masters, you should see those Juniors spin when chasing the Masters on their bigger gears into the back straight headwind.

Full results of Round I of the Super Sprint Series can be found here http://sss.aboc.com.au/rounds/2016-2017/round-1-results. Thanks to Carl Brewer and his ABOC team for Directing and support the series for many years.

The rain stayed away but the wind was cold and made for some challenging spectator conditions, so in true BBN style we boiled up the kettle and handed out the free tea, coffee and hot chocolate to everyone to keep the Spring chills away.

Once the presentations and free sausages were handed out we kicked off the Kierins and each Grade of the SS had a one race final behind the motorbike. It was a sight to see a multiple Olympian being briefed by a World Champion, only at Blacky !

Once again , even after a full day of racing (it was now 5pm) everyone put the hammer down and across each grade we were treated to some great racing, notably David Gallagher just keeping the young guns on his hip long enough on Turn 4 to take out the win in B Grade and Josiah Ng coming from 6th wheel to take the win in A Grade.

Thanks to all the Volunteers who make the racing happen, the officials who keep it all on track and the riders for entertaining us all day. I know I was exhausted just watching.

The next round is Sunday Nov the 27th with the same format, Endurance in the morning, SS in the afternoon and then the John Nicholson Kierin. $25 all day entry, the bast value racing in town.

The next Saturday Track session is Nov 5th with registration open from 12:30pm.

So if you missed out because of the radar, don’t worry there are plenty off opportunities to come.

Track is definitely back.
