JETS - Beginner Level

JETS Beginner Level 

The skills riders will learn while at the JETS Beginner level include:

General
  • Able to Listen and take instructions from Coach and helpers
  • Basic ability to ride a bike (balance, bike control, use brakes)
  • Check own bike and helmet is in safe working order
  • Start independently
  • Ride in and out of the saddle
  • Ride beside another rider
  • Ride one-handed
  • Brake within a designated distance (emergency brake)
  • Riding in a group, being predictable and aware of other riders
  • Signalling and calling out
Track
  • Start and stop from the fence independently
  • Start from handheld start
  • Able to hold a line and ride at a steady pace
  • Ability to follow a wheel and ride at a steady pace in down-track
  • Ability to roll turns (with correct head checking, indicating, pulling up and down the track)
  • Modulate speed with pedals (Faster / Slower)
  • Ride in drops
  • Ability to look and be aware of others on the track, holding a line
  • Participate in simulated races (Flying 200, scratch, motor pace, elimination, team pursuit, team sprint)  *Only after mastering basic skills
  • Know the lines and parts of the track (duckboard, sprinters lane, blue line, fence, The Shute etc)
Road
  • Cornering
  • Aware of adjusting speed and conering to conditions
  • Riding in a bunch (Holding line, allowing space, maintaining attention)
  • Knoweldge of road rules (including cycling specific)
  • Staying left, being aware of other road/path users
  • Following directions of Coach, Marshals, TC's and Commissaires
  • Signalling turns and stopping, indicating hazzards, communicating with fellow riders
  • Assessing safe cycle routes
  • Gear selection and changing gears
  • Descending safely
